The work of CWOWer Rochelle Youk will adorn the tasting room walls of Novel Brewing Company during June and July, and they’ll host a night with Rochelle on June 22nd.

Rochelle’s art explores interstices informs relative to her own Korean and Japanese heritage in relationship to growing up as an Asian-American in Los Angeles. In the current political climate, explorations of identity in regards to culture, ethnicity, and the constructs of race have become even more central to Youk’s work.

Although trained as an oil painter, this exploration has led Youk down many different avenues, including installation, artist books, printmaking, and sculpture. She received her BFA in painting from the Boston University, College of Fine Arts in 2002 and later went on to earn her MFA in 2010 from the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition to her own art practice, Youk also heads up the book bindery at the fine edition publisher, The Arion Press, where she completed a bookbinding apprenticeship in 2012. Traditional craft forms, such as her work at Arion, is a great influence as well as op art, color field painting, pattern and decoration, obsessional art, and the folk art and painting practices of Asia.
